Fincantieri Group’s Wave 2 the Future project aims to enable the use of hydrogen in the maritime sector.
Wave 2 the Future is part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on Hydrogen, a European initiative to develop strategic supply chain ecosystems. The IPCEI Hydrogen Hy2Tech aims to promote innovation and environmental transition by making available green hydrogen and the technologies needed to harness its decarbonization potential.
Different green technologies exist. These offer great potential for reducing emissions in the maritime sector, but currently no single technology can simultaneously meet all the necessary requirements, such as volumetric efficiency, availability, and adaptability for installation on board. In addition, to be usable by ships, green fuels must be available in ports and must be economically viable.
Therefore, it is essential to develop a combination of green fuels and technologies that meet the operational needs of the maritime sector.
Hydrogen, as a possible alternative fuel, has the characteristic of producing no pollutant emissions.
Wave2theFuture is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and is financially supported by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy. The planned facilitation is part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP) intervention.
IPCEIs are projects of strategic importance that the European Commission has identified in crucial areas such as hydrogen. These initiatives aim to promote EU innovation and competitiveness by encouraging member states to submit proposals for projects worthy of funding.

Wave 2 the Future aims to employ hydrogen as fuel on cruise ships and to develop hydrogen-powered technologies that can be applied on board.
In addition, the project helps define regulations for the use of hydrogen in the maritime sector, ensuring safe technological solutions.
Wave 2 the Future is divided into three integrated initiatives(Work Packages) involving the mobility sectors and the hydrogen system Stakeholder chain.
Isotta Fraschini Motori S.p.a, a subsidiary of Fincantieri, is involved in the project on two of the three WPs with unique project code B19J23000690004.
1. WP1
Work Package 1 aims to contribute to the energy transition of the maritime sector through the development of zero-emission on-board power generation technologies.
The goal of WP1, developed by Isotta Fraschini Motori of Bari, Italy, is to create an integrated solution consisting of an alternative engine and fuel cell system, powered by 100 percent hydrogen, combined with batteries and possibly solar panel systems, to create green power generation systems applicable to the widest range of ships.
The end result will be the definition and testing of the first prototype of the new combined power generation system, called Hybrid Green Power Generation System (HGPGS).
2. WP3
Work Package 3 includes the design, construction and demonstration under operational conditions of two prototype power generation technologies in the maritime domain:
– A power generation system consisting of a hybrid plant that combines engines and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) powered by LNG, including synthetic or biogenic, which also includes the development of the solution that directly employs hydrogen. SOFCs, when fueled by synthetic or biogenic natural gas, transform operation to net-zero and, when fueled by hydrogen, to zero-emission.
– A power generation system consisting of a hybrid plant that combines conventional engines and hydrogen-fueled PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cells for zero-emission operation in ports and while sailing in protected sites for which Isotta Fraschini Motori S.p.a will develop a 3 MW power containerized solution for use in indoor naval and land environments and a 1 MW power containerized solution for use in outdoor environments (both naval and land).
Fincantieri and Isotta Fraschini Motori S.p.a. participated inHydrogen Week 2024, November 18-22 in Brussels. This event, organized by the European Commission, Hydrogen Europe and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, is the leading exhibition dedicated to the hydrogen value chain.
Hydrogen Week was an important opportunity to present to the public the Wave 2 The Future project, an initiative supported by IPCEI(Important Projects of Common European Interest) with the goal of contributing to a sustainable future in maritime transport.
Wave 2 The Future was also included in the publication Heroes of Hydrogen, an annual photo initiative sponsored by Hydrogen Europe to highlight pioneers and innovators in the hydrogen industry.

Hy2Tech is the first wave of IPCEI projects specifically dedicated to the development of new hydrogen-related technologies along the entire value chain; it consists of four technical fields (TFs):
TF1: hydrogen production on a large scale and through the development of new technologies
TF2: the production of fuel cells (fuel cells)
TF3: the development of new storage, transportation and distribution technologies
TF4: the development of end-user applications (including naval mobility)
